February is mainly known as the month when we celebrate Valentine’s Day. Although Valentine’s Day is a fun day to exchange chocolate and gifts, it is not a national holiday. In the United States, the national holiday celebrated in February would be Washington’s Birthday.
Washington’s Birthday is the third Monday in February. The day is also known as President’s Day because it celebrates probably the two most famous U.S. Presidents. George Washington, the first President of the U.S., who was born on Feb. 22nd and Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12th and oversaw the end of slavery and the U.S. Civil War.
Placing the holiday on the third Monday allows it to fall somewhere between these two famous President’s birthdays. (Feb. 15th 〜 Feb. 21st) This year that holiday will be on Feb. 20th.
I lived in Washington D.C. for 6 years when I was younger. If you have a chance, I recommend you visit the Washington and Lincoln memorials there someday.
